The group started off about six years ago and has members from a mixture of ages and backgrounds. The turnout varies between six and fourteen people, though we have about forty people on  the list of members.  The books we read vary from ‘light’ to ‘heavy’, usually written either by or about gay men. Anyone is free to choose a book but they don’t necessarily have to introduce it themselves. Discussions are quite lively: we have one member (me) who loves virtually every book fairly uncritically and one who virtually savages every book (but he is quite gentle really!).

We meet monthly, usually Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, at 7.30 for 8 in a member’s flat in the centre of Bristol and chat over a glass of wine, beer or cup of coffee.

Some people turn up to every meeting; others choose which meetings to attend according to whichever book is being discussed at any given time. Either is fine!

Members Bristol is a free network, designed to provide a meeting place for gay professionals for business, social and networking opportunities. Events take place throughout the year, and consist of a monthly Drinks Evening, Supper Clubs and MEMBERship card holderonly events.   The team behind Members Bristol has been running and hosting events for gay professionals in Bristol and the South West since 2007. We will continue to promote and host these events as a friendly, relaxed, informal way of meeting like-minded people. What is a “professional”, you might ask? Well to us, it’s anyone who thinks they might fit into the category! It’s by no means limited to those who have a traditional profession (e.g. doctor, lawyer, etc).  Our members currently consist of doctors, lawyers, accountants, IT consultants, engineers, actors, film producers, music promoters, retail specialists, estate agents, PR and advertising experts, chefs, you name it.

The Old Market Tavern in Old Market – also referred to as ‘The Gay Village’ in Bristol, is a traditional pub with a beer garden, conservatory that offers the best of both world: a quiet pub atmosphere in the week and a lively, friendly venue at the weekend. Fabulous old-fashioned Wadsworth boozer with good-quality ales – the best pint of 6X in the city? …one of the busiest lunch destinations in the area, thanks to a small but excellent menu full of good-value homecooked meals and a bargain Sunday roast. Hugely popular with office workers by day and part of Bristol’s thriving gay scene by night. …Warm, friendly, with secluded beer garden and glazed conservatory to make the most of the sun.   Venue Magazine Drinking Out West guide 2006
