We will need to send you a paper form to sign and return so that we can:
- verify your address by posting you the membership pack there
- be sure that the request wasn’t a prank
- get your signed permission to use your contact details
This does not mean that we will send you a lot of post; we try to keep post to a minimum by sending most information electronically, to keep down cost and conserve natural resources, but sometimes we may have to hold paper postal ballots.
An additional reason is that on occasions we all read emails quickly and not all that carefully, while we read paper forms very carefully before signing them. By sending a paper membership form we try to make sure that prospective members think carefully before giving permission to send them literature that could be opened by others and which identifies them as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. There are those for whom such a disclosure could be disastrous, for example if they are from an intolerant culture, or whose family, flatmates or neighbours are homophobic, or perhaps live in premises owned by a homophobic landlord.
We hope in this way to avoid future problems.
